Switching between painting in watercolor, drawing with ink on paper, and cutting paper with an Xacto knife, Monica Wright depicts isolated figures, often with botanical elements. Though her mediums are broad, her presentation is consistent; there is an emphasis on the process, from the nontraditional, mixed mark-making on paper, to the deliberate taking away of paper with a blade – she does not try to conceal her method of drawing. The harsh, almost grotesque, quality of lines that render the human form are juxtaposed with the overarching beauty of the subject, posing questions about the context the figure is from. Likewise, the literal ‘taking away’ of her cut paper works hint at an underlying situational conflict in the form's absence.
