Reusing old textiles to decrease social and environmental impacts and turning them into products that further decrease environmental impacts.
After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, a friend asked me to submit some bags to sell at an art auction that went to benefit the victims. This is when I came up with the "Help your brother. Save your mother" saying and put it on the bags in the auction and all of the bags sold!
In 2015, after someone saw my sister with a bag and said they wanted one too, the name was changed to HASOM which means: "Help Another. Save Our Mother." and it was decided that the bags would be sold again and would continue to help others.
All products are made out of upcycled fabric (sheets, curtains, old shirts, old unwanted fabric, etc.). Even the labels on the bags are eco-friendly. They are ordered from a company that prints using eco-friendly, water-based inks on natural and synthetic fiber textiles. The yellow that can be found around the edges and in the label of all HASOM Bag products represent the universal color of friendship.
When you buy a HASOM Bag product you are:
- reducing the amount of textiles in the landfill as all products are made of upcycled fabric giving it a second life,
-reducing the amount of toxins released into our environment from fabric production as all products are made of upcycled fabric,
- reducing the need for production of virgin fabrics in unsafe and unfair working conditions since we are not purchasing new fabrics,
- keeping plastic bags out of the landfill when you chose this bag over the plastic grocery bags, and
- helping people, with 25% of profits going to an organization that helps fight hunger or works in youth development.
