Lighthearted themes, serious stitches.
Hand of Bela Peck offers sweet cashmere stuffed toys, whimsical wool appliqué, and primitive goods.
My work is the off-beat genius that results from growing up in a colonial Connecticut home with artistic parents who focused on accurate historical restoration with a sense of humor. Critters wintering in the walls were treated like house guests. Coins found under floorboards held heroic tales. And handmade dolls were prized possessions.
In keeping with the primitive tradition I use up-cycled fabric purchased at local thrift stores to support charitable causes, found items to reduce environmental waste, and vintage notions to keep nostalgia alive. I employ age old techniques in hopes the skilled artisans of the past will remain relevant in a disposable age.
I have had the honor of being featured in Better Homes and Gardens, Somereset Studios Prims, Stuffed Magazine and the Galveston Daily News. My work is available on Etsy, at Hendley Market in Galveston, and Space Montrose in Houston, Texas. I am active in art fairs and market days across Texas.
