My current body of work is a study of feminist behaviour in the millennial generation that is often misunderstood. These pieces explore images people post of themselves to the public domain and the spirit behind these images. Typically the models are at the mercy of the artist/photographer, but I find it liberating to allow the model to take the image themselves from her favorite angle and preferred light as a ‘selfie’. I want the entire process to be an empowering experience for them. I have found from questioning the ‘models’ and my younger peers that by objectifying themselves through these images, they feel that they take the power away from the viewer and control it by their own hand. I then take these charged images and attempt to give them even further power by creating my art from them and embellishing them. I want to create work that excites and empowers everyone involved through the freedom of expression. Painting is a sensual experience of expression and confidence. My delicate layering of color celebrates the beauty of these young and independent women, who are depicted in their own light, rather than through the male gaze.
