My art is a combination of my childhood illustration heroes that graced the surfaces of skateboard decks, comic book pages and old Nintendo and Sega video game cases, and my more refined admiration of illustrators such as William Blake. I am interested in combining fantasy themed art with the ink splatter style of illustration indicative of Leonard Baskin and Ralph Steadman. I love tapping rich philosophies and mythologies for my content. I very rarely stray towards the political as art for me was always used as an escape from the daily routine of 'work, eat and sleep. Repeat.' It is an effective tool for broadening my world, making boundaries as limitless as the universe where we live.
In my Denton, TX studio I listen to my records or to tapes on an antiquated boom box to get the creative juices flowing or to simply keep momentum. Usually some form of old school metal or punk to break up the monotony. I start with line work using ink and mix different drawing mediums together to experiment and to find forms and patterns. When I'm more patient I stick to prismacolor pencils for my hues, but every now and then I try to have my way with traditional oils and other painterly mediums to unceramonious results.
